A Mass Shooting Erupts at a Theater During Opening Night of 'The Dark Knight Rises'

Last night during a sold-out midnight premiere of the new Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises," 12 people were killed and 59 were injured in Aurora, Colorado. 


The shooter - identified as a 24-year-old honors student with a clean record, James Holmes - allegedly unloaded four weapons' full of ammunition into the crowd sitting in the movie theater. 


According to ABC News, the number of casualties makes this incident the largest mass shooting in U.S. history.



According to news reports, Holmes allegedly entered the movie auditorium wearing a ballistics helmet, a bullet-proof vest, bullet-proof leggings, a gas mask and gloves. He detonated multiple smoke bombs, and then fired at people in the theater.



ABC reports that according to police sources, Holmes told the officers arresting him that he was 'The Joker,' the well-known villain in the second installment of the Batman trilogy. He also told police he booby-trapped his apartment which led officers to evacuate his apartment building.

Holmes was apprehended within minutes of the midnight theater shooting. Police found him at his car behind the theater still fully dressed in his gear and carrying three weapons, according to news reports.


What is the world coming to!? It's sad to think no one is safe anywhere these days, not even to enjoy a movie for a couple of hours.
